Introduction to Beginning Supervision Skills: Tips and Tools to Incorporate as a Novice Clinical Supervisor
In-person Training on Tuesday, June 28 at LRADAC in Columbia – (6 Hours) 9 am to 4 pm
Presented by Andrea Fleming
Training Description: Becoming a clinical supervisor implies and requires intentionality in your role as a gatekeeper in the counseling profession. Research indicates that training, mentorship, and coursework may differ for various workplace settings and not place emphasis on the same concepts. As a result, knowing where to start as a supervisor can seem cumbersome and disjointed at times. Along with building a rapport with supervisees, the literature reveals that clinical supervision is most effective when clear expectations are established, mutual evaluative processes between supervisors and supervisees are included, and ongoing feedback is provided which fosters growth and the development of counselors and their proficiencies.
Objectives:
- Participants will discuss areas that have been emphasized for them in their training and orientation in becoming a supervisor
- Participants will be introduced to concepts and tools that will assist with organizing and documenting the goals, objectives, and sessions for clinical supervision
- Participants will be introduced to tools that may be incorporated for meaningful feedback and mutual evaluative processes
Pre-registration is required. NAADAC/APSC members: $49 – Non-members: $149

Advanced Supervision Skills: Supervision Models, Exploring the Self of the Therapist, and Considerations when Managing Dual Roles as a Supervisor
In-person Training on Wednesday, June 29 at LRADAC in Columbia – (6 Hours) 9 am to 4 pm
Presented by Andrea Fleming
Training Description: Clinical supervision is the foundational activity that connects theory to practice for counseling professionals. Many accrediting bodies and regulatory standards require that counselors employ evidence-based best practices with their populations served. This same premise should be applied when providing clinical supervision to our supervisees. Supervision models offer a framework from which we offer guidance and feedback. Along with case conceptualization, clinical supervision is about exploring the “self of the therapist” to include biases and blind spots that may either foster or rupture the therapeutic alliance. As dual-role supervisors, we have the unique challenge of balancing clinical and administrative supervisory responsibilities, which is rarely addressed when being trained, yet impacts level of engagement.
Objectives:
- Participants will be introduced to various supervision models and the benefits of incorporating them into their supervisory practice
- Participants will be introduced and discuss the importance of emphasizing self-awareness, understanding the client’s worldview, biases and developing multicultural competencies
- Participants will examine the concept of “dual role supervisor” and gain strategies on managing their clinical and administrative responsibilities
Pre-registration is required. NAADAC/APSC members: $49 – Non-members: $149
